Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that results in the blockage of hair follicles and oil-producing glands under the skin. Sometimes the body produces a lot of oil that keeps our skin moist, namely sebum. Because of that, dead skin cells can get trapped inside the pores. As a result of all these, white or black spots to appear. Likewise, bacteria living in the skin remain trapped in the pore. This causes inflamed pimples to appear. Usually, these pimples appear on the face, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Acne can affect people of all ages. But it is much more common in young people.

A typical pimple may be red in color with a yellow tip. Or in the form of small blisters without inflammation and sometimes larger cyst-like structures.

What Causes Its Occurrence?

When our skin pores are clogged, this clogging creates a suitable breeding ground for the bacteria found inside our pores. This bacterial overgrowth causes inflammation over time. In addition, various reasons such as the fatty foods we consume and our sleep patterns can cause its formation.

Here are the main causes of acne formation:

  • Side effects of some medications you use
  • Your skin produces too much oil
  • Your pores clogged by oil and dead skin cells
  • Squeezing, irritating the acne
  • Changes in your hormone levels (e.g. puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy, birth control pills, and stress)
